Frequently asked questions
I forgot my PIN. How do I recover my vault?
Your vault is encrypted with a key derived from your PIN. There is no backdoor and no "forgot PIN" server-side reset — that would defeat the entire security model. If you have access to another device or a backup, you can restore from there. This is why we recommend storing your recovery codes: they let you regain access to each account individually even if the vault itself is lost.
Where are my codes stored? Is anything sent to a server?
Everything is stored locally on your device, encrypted with AES-256-GCM. Nothing is ever transmitted to a server. Authara has no backend that can receive or decrypt your vault.
What are recovery codes and why does Authara store them?
Recovery codes are one-time backup codes issued by websites when you enable two-factor authentication. Most people lose them because they're stored in a separate notes app or not at all. Authara keeps them alongside the TOTP account they protect — so when you need them, they're exactly where you'd look.
How do I add a new account?
Tap the + button on the home screen. You can scan the QR code shown by the website or service, or enter the secret key manually. The account appears immediately with a live TOTP code.
Can I move my vault to a new phone?
Encrypted backup and cross-device sync are on the roadmap for a future release. For now, you can re-add accounts manually using the QR codes or secret keys from each service, and re-enter any recovery codes you have saved.
Is Authara compatible with Google, GitHub, X, and other services?
Yes. Authara implements standard TOTP (RFC 6238), which is the protocol used by virtually every service that offers authenticator-app 2FA. If a service shows you a QR code or secret key for an authenticator app, Authara works with it.
What happens to my clipboard after I copy a code?
Authara automatically clears the clipboard 60 seconds after you copy a code, so the TOTP value doesn't linger in your clipboard history.
Does Authara support Android?
An Android version is in active development and is on the near-term roadmap. Sign up for early access on the home page to be notified when it's available.
